Go to my userinfo page and choose someone from my friends list. Post their username in a comment and I'll tell you what I know about them, or how I came to know them. You are allowed to ask about yourself if you are curious.

I originally saw this meme on [livejournal.com profile] mdyesowitch's LJ but didn't get to posting it then.

I saw it again today posted by [livejournal.com profile] topaz_munro, after hitting his LJ from a mention on ne.general.

It's more interesting to me at the moment, however (hence this post) because of a confluence of other unrelated posts, most particularly a thread over on [livejournal.com profile] dpolicar's LJ, wherein I said "Hey, why do you sound familiar" and he thought it was due to a connection via [livejournal.com profile] gnomi; as it turned out, it wasn't, and it was for the same reason that I friended [livejournal.com profile] thatwesguy.

This leads to the happy and interesting land of "why does person A, who I know from context foo, also have person B friended, who is someone I know from context bar, totally unrelated to context foo"?

There are some loops and cross-connects that I wasn't expecting among my friends list; one reason I'm posting this is to hope it spreads so I can find out how some of them came about.

(There are other even more tangential things that brought it to mind among the posts on my friends list, but this entry is already too long for this margin.)

Friends are an interesting question, and one I've been curious about since Whodini posed that immortal question when I was a young'un, "How many of us have them?"
You and I are friends because your wife and I are friends. Your wife and I are friends through a complex series of events that baarely makes sense even if you lived through it. Our friendship was initially based on propinquity. for first impressions definitely did not carry the day with us. Part of it was a timing issue, part was an awkwardness that comes from meeting new people, that I still have buried in a small facet of my personality. According to Robertson Davis' character, it will resurface in my 50s and be a powerful force to be reckoned with, but lets move away from that.
Once we'd formed a mutual attachment, our shared interests, particularly loves for readings and computers, bonded us together and then, through a particularly compex series of machinations, which leads me to believe it's Tril's fault that I ever met people by such circuitous means, since I certainly do it much less on my own, she met you, rest is history, etc. etc.
Somewhere in there, I think I buried my point, which was, "yeah, relationships are twisty."

I do have to admit to being curious about why you're following [livejournal.com profile] lain_mac's journal.

Having found this post because [livejournal.com profile] ckd just friended me, I recognize you, and find myself wondering: How'd you come to friend [livejournal.com profile] hawkegirl?
From: [identity profile] mdyesowitch.livejournal.com
It began, as these things often do, rather innocently. I'm looking (in the early preplanning stages) for a midwife who does homebirth to help me manage my hoplings, assuming there might be some someday, (assuming you are that cos, I shouldn't have to go into more detail on that). [livejournal.com profile] tpau recommended her, and I sent her an email, which has gone unanswered, presumably lost, but I friended her solely to not lose her name, which might have worked better if I'd included her on my default friends page.
Is this someone I should know better than I do?

I am that cos, yes, so "hoplings" makes sense :)
[livejournal.com profile] hawkegirl is fascinating, and a great midwife if you fit philosophically. I don't know if you should get to know her better but I do recommend it. Also, I currently live in her house.

[sorry for the late response, I was on the road all of August travelling around the country]
