I still can't wrap my head around it

I can't. I just can't. Hours since I first heard the news, and I still can't.

filkergem, who I first met almost 20 years ago, is gone, killed in a house fire that completely destroyed the house.

Please give Greg, his wife Maya (kyttn), stepdaughter Faeryn (lovensong87), brother Scott (smcmullan), and his other family and friends whatever prayers, thoughts, and/or energy you can spare, in whatever tradition you practice.

Grey was actually a member of my church for years, and was the webmaster there before me (http://burlingtonpres.org). He only overlapped briefly with my tenure, but remained close friends with much of the congregation. We were always kept abreast of his life. I had no idea we had that in common. Our church was stunned into grief yesterday morning by the news.

I also had no idea that we both knew Greg.

I knew him through IRC, and alt.callahans, and fandom-in-general. Others knew him through filking, MIT (APO, SIPB, or just generally being around), church, or something else.

Yet in every one of these social circles, he's remembered the same way. He was always the same Greg, there with a laugh and a smile or a hug and a hand, whichever you needed; ready to do what needed doing, but never seeking attention—even avoiding it; making us all better people by his quiet example.
