#5 is actually a side effect of #3 combined with #6.
I went to a 4-year high school (grades 9 through 12). I entered as a member of the class of '88, but graduated with the class of '86.
At the time, the school graded on a 4.0 scale, with AP classes weighted with a 10% bonus when calculating GPA. This meant that an A in an AP class counted for a 4.4 on the 4.0 scale.
You can see where this is going, can't you?
Since I had taken the same number of AP classes in two years (four: US History, European history, Calculus [AB], English Lit; the Comp Sci test I took without a class) as anyone else could have taken in four, and a proportionately lower number of "regular" classes that only counted for 4.0s, the weighting left me with an otherwise unreachable GPA (4.1-something, I think), while the next best GPAs were 4.012. (Oh, did I mention that it was a tie...between the co-captains of the football team?)
It wouldn't have been fair to give me a class rank of 1 (I suppose they could have declared it a three-way tie), but they had to put down something as a class rank for college applications.
So I graduated 0th in a class of 120 or so, the co-captains of the football team tied for valedictorian, and there was no salutatorian.
(And you started alt.callahans? I don't think I knew that...)
Well, I sent the newgroup control message. The people posting to it created it.
