Thoughts of the past
2006-09-11 16:40Seven years ago today, I stood on the observation level of 2WTC and watched airplanes come in to land at LGA, JFK, and EWR. I looked north, to the Empire State Building; south, to the Statue of Liberty; east, to Long Island and the Atlantic; west, to the vast continent of North America.
Five years ago today, I left the conference room and its TV behind, went into the server room, and did an OS install on a box that needed one. I did it because it was what I could do, and because maybe the database server on that box would help a researcher discover something that would heal someone, someday.
Today, I sat in a window seat on the left-hand side of a flight from PHL to BOS, and looked down upon New York City. The bridges, the rail lines...the buildings. Those that were there, and those that were not. Lost in thought, trying not to cry, I didn't hear the flight attendant asking me what I wanted to drink.
This morning, before leaving PHL, I hugged my dad. I hugged him all the harder because so many people can't hug their loved ones today.
