Overnights, 2025

As usual, ordered by first visit and asterisks indicate multiple separate visits.

2025 got my travel ramping back up (finally), even though I only went to two conventions and one of them (Worldcon) was literally in my city (between my apartment and my usual airport, though technically there's also an airport with international service between my apartment and downtown -- LKE). Two overnights from delayed flights; both would have stuck me at DTW (Romulus, MI) except that for the second one I was able to rebook on the next morning's IAD-SEA nonstop instead.

The big trip was Kraków and environs, with a bonus pair of overnights in Calgary because business class YYC-KRK was literally half the price of SEA-KRK or YVR-KRK. Having NEXUS made a Canada stopover easy; though I kinda miss the old iris scan kiosks, the new facial recognition ones are a lot faster.

Romulus, Calgary, Balice, Sterling, and SeaTac were all airport hotels.

• Romulus and Sterling were airline-provided hotels due to flight delays.
• Calgary's hotel was originally chosen so that I could get away without a rental car by using the hotel shuttle, though I later decided to rent one anyway (during both stopovers) to give me a chance to see more of the area. (The hotel had free parking, and I got a pretty good rate on the cars too.)
• Balice was an optimization because my flight out of KRK was at ridiculous-o-clock in the morning (so early, the hotel gave me a grab-and-go breakfast bag since the regular breakfast wouldn't start being served until after I was on the plane). The hotel is literally across the street from the terminal and connected by the same skybridge used to get from the train station to the terminal, so I took the train out the night before.
• SeaTac was because aedifica had an early flight (though not as early as my KRK flight) and I could then take the light rail & bus home later in the day.

Yay including Calgary! I'm glad you got to see a bit of it, hope the weather was conducive! I live about 3 hours north of Calgary in Edmonton, but YEG isn't as much of an air hub as YYC.

The weather was pretty good (it was late March, so still chilly but not unreasonably so).

Poland was very much new to me, and I really enjoyed it. I'd love to go back for another (hopefully longer) visit sometime.

It was okay most of the times I went through there; the worst experiences were probably my December arrival (due to cancellations, baggage claim was an utter shitshow and it took literally over an hour for our bags to arrive) and my January 2026 departure (huge check-in line even for Sky Priority, and the only useful bag drop option that might have sped things up was outside in 22 degree weather).

That's a pretty good list; I've been to all of them except Budapest, and it's on my wishlist.

I am still amused that it had never even crossed my mind until about two days before I bought my plane ticket. Totally worth going, though! Highly recommend.
