I should probably write this up as a post and link to it from my profile.
Back when doing Internet stuff meant having far too much money to waste, companies would try to hire and/or sell to sysadmins at technical conferences by giving away various logo-bearing tchotchkes. (I still have a very nice Genuity-labeled CD case opener, which has lasted longer than Genuity did.)
In this case, one company had foam squeezy toys for stress relief...little blue smiling sharks. Later that day, I needed an object to demonstrate my digital camera's macro focus mode...dug into the bag, and found a candidate.
Many years later, when looking through iPhoto for pictures that might make good userpics (read: looked good at 100x100 and weren't pictures of me) I spotted El Sharko here and the rest was history. When I need a themed icon, I just get the shark, the digicam, and some props.
I like your shark too! I've seen him around--thanks for your recent comment regarding my Mac questions. I've added your journal to my reading list because...well, I might just learn something!

Where did you find the little blue darling?
