A quick pre-Arisia catch-up post

The over-the-holidays trip to the UK went well; in terms of friends-list shout-outs, we saw the original of [livejournal.com profile] jmhm's userpic at the British Museum, a Goodies retrospective TV show featuring [livejournal.com profile] ffutures's icon of "Kitten Kong" knocking over the then-Post Office Tower (which is near where we were staying in London), and a neat exhibit at the British Library.

The exhibit? Oh, it was about the Nobel Prizes, and while I didn't see any specific mentions of Frank Wilczek, there was a sample from an earlier laureate's wife's journal. It used some sort of odd technology called "paper"; [livejournal.com profile] betsythedevine, have you heard about it? It's apparently good in situations where power outlets aren't available. I couldn't figure out how to get the RSS feed working, though.

I did find it both interesting and amusing to see how Nobel-blogging has its historical antecedents. I also got to see what the place-settings for the banquet look like up close.

We also finally got on the London Eye despite the well-known fact that sharks and heights don't mix, and managed to have it be on the clearest day of the entire time we were there. Recommendation: book online in advance if you go; we did (thanks to the ever-organized [livejournal.com profile] hr_macgirl) and it saved us a long wait in line.

In other news, Google Earth for the Mac is out, for those who somehow missed hearing about it already. It's such a fun toy, and Cambridge has really good hi-res coverage.

The new LJ "nudge" so-called feature? Please don't use it on me. If I don't post, it's because I don't want to. I'm a shark, not your monkey.

Now to finish up a few things, get lunch, and get ready to head over to the Park Plaza for Arisia. Dear Weather Gods: what you're supplying right now is good, please keep it there for a few days. Thanks.

Someone else from this country has actually heard of the Goodies? (mind you, I have no idea if I'd find them as funny now as when I was a kid.)

I'm heading over to Arisia as soon as I can bail out of work, though I suspect traffic may keep me from making the 6pm panels as I hope.

They're an acquired taste, I think.

Unfortunately the Mac Google Earth won't run on anything below OS 10.4

Thee guesses which version I've got on my iBook...

I don't recommend my upgrade method: Have a mechanical hardware failure with 100% data loss of the laptop hard drive. At least it came back with 10.4 on it (free upgrade, I guess), but the recovery from backups or data reentry is... painful.

I think that "nudge" thing a Really Bad Idea.

They've created an opt-out for it (enter "set opt_no_nudge 1" on the admin console) but it's not live yet.

Thanks for the heads up!

Paper, eh?

Hmmm, so hard to keep up with these new technologies...

Have a great time at Arisia!
